A padel bat (or padel racquet) is the player's main piece of equipment: a solid, stringless racquet with a perforated face, a foam core, and a rubber grip. Bats are categorised by the shape of the head, which changes the balance and the playing characteristics.
Round, teardrop, diamond
- Round: balanced, forgiving, larger sweet spot — the standard recommendation for beginners and intermediates.
- Teardrop: a hybrid shape that gives more power than round without losing too much control.
- Diamond: head-heavy, smaller sweet spot, more power and spin — favoured by advanced and competitive players.
What to recommend
Most players play better with a more forgiving bat than they think they need. A 4.5 club player using a tournament-grade diamond bat usually loses more points to off-centre hits than they gain from the extra power. Clubs that rent bats for first-time players should stock round-shaped, mid-weight options — they make the first session enjoyable, which is most of the conversion battle.
